Top 10 Tips for Planning the Perfect Engagement Session

Top 10 Tips for Planning the Perfect Engagement Session

Planning an engagement session can be an exciting yet daunting task. As a seasoned photographer, I've gathered some essential tips to help couples make the most of their special day. Here’s my advice to ensure your engagement session is a memorable and enjoyable experience.

1. Choose the Right Location
Selecting a location with personal significance or varied backdrops can make your photos truly special. Whether it's the site of your first date, a favorite park, or a place with stunning natural scenery, the right setting can set the tone for your entire session.

2. Consider the Time of Day
Weekday evenings work best. The parks are less busy and we won’t be fighting other photoshoots for the same spots. Plan for golden hour, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon – this time of day provides soft, flattering lighting that enhances the romantic atmosphere of your photos.

3. Coordinate Your Outfits
Wearing outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy can enhance your photos. Consider bringing a change of clothes for variety and ensure your attire matches the location and season. I find that at least one “dressed up” outfit and one casual works best.

4. Plan Ahead
Discuss your vision, preferences, and any specific shots you want with me in advance. If we’re hitting multiple locations, creating a timeline can help make the most of your session and ensure everything runs smoothly.

5. Incorporate Personal Elements
Bringing props or items that hold personal meaning, such as a pet, a special blanket, or something related to a shared hobby, can add a unique and personal touch to your photos. If you bring a pet, please be sure to bring someone along to “wrangle” for us.

6. Keep It Natural
I will be guiding and directing you to create candid moments and genuine interactions. I focus on creating space for laughing, and interacting naturally with each other. Ultimately my goal is to capture the candid moments in-between the poses..

7. Think About the Season
Different seasons offer unique opportunities for beautiful photos. Embrace the natural beauty of the time of year, whether it's blooming flowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, colorful leaves in autumn, or a snowy winter landscape.

8. Leave Non-Essentials At Home
Plan on traveling light. If possible try not to wear an electronic watch and leave your cell phones in the car. If you have to bring your phone – please keep it in your back pocket or give it to me to hold. Girls – watch out for the hair ties on the wrist. Be sure to bring along any make-up or hair care items you may need.

9. Be On Time
Let me rephrase that - be early. As we are likely planing your session around the best light we will need to be on time and ready to shoot. Good light fades fast. If you find yourself running late – don’t stress! While I prefer to have lot’s of time to work, I very used to shooting under pressure. It’s your job to enjoy the day, it’s my job to capture it.

10. Enjoy the Process
Remember to enjoy the experience. Keep the atmosphere light and fun, focusing on each other and the love you share. This joy will naturally reflect in your photos, making them more genuine and memorable.

Following these tips can help create an engagement session that's not only enjoyable but also produces beautiful, lasting memories. Happy planning and if you have any questions - please ask me.
